Organ Donor Information

A single organ donor can save the lives of up to eight people by donating the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas and intestines. One tissue donor can improve the lives of more than 50 people by donating eyes, bone, soft tissue, heart valves, veins and skin.

Transplantation, a miracle of modern medicine, is tragically unavailable to a startling number of Americans. The national list of patients waiting for vital organs – now more than 84,000 - continues to increase each year due to the dramatic, explosive growth in transplant medicine.

On average, 115 people are added to the nation's organ transplant waiting list each day--one every 13 minutes. In addition, approximately 17 patients die every day while awaiting organ--one person every 85 minutes. Over 6,000 individuals died last year while on the U.S. organ transplant waiting list because the organ they needed was not donated in time. The TIGER Fund web pages are dedicated to the memory of those patients.

NATIONAL MARROW DONOR PROGRAM (NMDP)
This site provides general information on how to become a volunteer donor, answers the most frequently asked questions, and provides information on diseases treatable by marrow or blood stem cell transplantation.

This campaign is designed to promote the number of living kidney donors. There are more persons waiting for kidney transplants than any other organ. Minorities represent more than 50% of those in need of kidneys.

According to the United Network for Organ Sharing, there was a 16.5% increase in the number of living donations between 1999 and 2000.
68% of parents were living donors to their children (under the age of 18).
Due to the shortage of donors, the average wait for a kidney transplant is 3-5 years.
You can donate to someone who is not related to you. You may know a family member, friend, co-worker or neighbor who may be waiting for a kidney transplant. You can help shorten the length of time persons wait for transplantation.
Be encouraged! You can live a normal healthy life with one kidney.

Brochures and a video for your organization are available. Please e-mail your request or call (800) 393-2839.
